book about Martin Frankel

I met Frankel in FCI Fort Dix during my prison stay. He said he was innocent but he had no choice but to take a plea or he would sit the rest of his life behind bars. While in prison, I read a book about him called "Thief" that is in the library over there. He was one of the few that could hold a conversation in prison. They say he is either the most brilliant mind or simply a charlatan. He lived like a king and now lives like a pauper. I also won't forget how he wore his yarmulke held on to his head with a big paper clip and even though he always wore his yarmulka, he would steal eat treife (non kosher). I guess he used the yarmulke as a religious card. Religion does give you some benefits in jail.

One incident that I won't forget is that when Frankel left his walker by the door in the Chapel during Passover celebration, a little inmate named Schwartz picked it up and threw it in a rage, claiming it was blocking the door. We heard a big crash. Such is the danger of jail. You don't know who is going to explode at any moment and the problem is that you cannot escape, as you are locked in a room or in a building.
