Hudson County Jail, Kearny, NJ |
If there are thieves on the street, there are also thieves on the inside. The thievery is smuggling of contraband by officers sworn to uphold the law. I am talking about corrections officers. A story surfaced in the Jersey Journal where a prison guard, Isakova O. Sealy, was charged with official misconduct, conspiracy to commit official misconduct and pattern of official misconduct. He, an inmate and the inmate's mother conspired to bring contraband into the jail. See story here...http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2016/01/hudson_corrections_officer_charged_in_plot_to_smug.html
This story is as old as prostitution. When I was at FCI Fort Dix, cell phones and drugs were rampant and this is a "federal institution". At MDC, you can smoke at will. At Otisville, visitors dropped off contraband on their way in to visit the inmates. Even at MCC Manhattan where the worlds terrorists are brought to justice, contraband sneaks through the doors.
Can it be stopped? Probably not. Why not? Because humans are greedy and there will always be a greedy human in the pot. Will people get caught? Most likely because every one talks in jail. Truth and rumors spread like wildfire. The few bucks a guard will make for doing it will in the end knock him/her out of his job and he will cross the thin line from being an officer to an inmate.
