Newburgh Fire Chief Michael Vattar was indicted by the Feds for fraudulently obtaining retirement benefits. See news story from the feds here....http://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/newburgh-fire-chief-charged-white-plains-federal-court-fraudulently-obtaining
The theft amount is only $95,000 which is not a lot of money for the Feds. However, in my opinion as an ex lawyer, the fact that he was a lawyer and fire chief is more of the egregious conduct that they took him down. He disgraced his badge of honor and he has paid a heavy price by being criminally charged. The article says that he will plea not guilty. See article here...http://www.recordonline.com/article/20160120/NEWS/160129930
If he goes to trial and wins, he walks away a free man and keeps his law license or I assume would get reinstated. If he goes to trial and loses, the Judge will hammer him.
In my opinion, if he takes a guilty plea I can make an educated guess that he will get between probation and a year and a day (10 months) imprisonment. His crime is white collar so he would most likely end up in a camp.
