Mcrefugees, the homeless at Mcdonald's

A homeless women sleeping at a Mcdonald;s in Hong Kong

An interesting story appeared in NY Times today, 1/1/16, where it discusses the plight of the homeless in Asia, who migrate to Mcdonald's restaurants to sleep. Some of them are down and out, some are mentally ill, others drugged out. At least there is an institution besides the government that lets the downtrodden a place to sleep at night. Kudos for Mcdonald's.  The full story is here

I was no stranger to homeless in prison, especially at the notorious Don Jail, Toronto, where I was incarcerated for 86 days. I will never forget one night when a homeless person was thrown into our two man bunk cell and he had to sleep on a thin, beat up mattress on the floor. The problem was that it was after 9 pm and all cells were locked for the night and as he just came off the street, he stunk to high hell. I had to  put my dirty blanket over my head to block the smell of the garbage dump.
There was an interesting twist to this smelly story. The next day after he took a shower, he told me his name was Pacheco (Portugese) and as a child he lived on Brunswick Avenue , a block away from where my grandparents lived.  He said his father used to make wine in the basement.

In Fort Dix, I met a gentelman by the name of McIntyre from Chicago who was a bank robber. He said he used to own many homes but lost them due to the financial crisis of 2008, He said he robbed a bank because he was afraid to be homeless. He made his money to buy houses from owning a pizza shop that he worked at night and day. McIntyre, a tall balding Irish looking man with piercing blue eyes and a white pony tail, always had a long thumb fingernail. That is what I will remember about him. Nice chap and I wish him well. I used to walk the track with him at FCI Fort Dix. He ended up with a 50 month sentence.
