Artesia New Mexico has made the headlines and it's not what you think

Artesia, New Mexico
The news is not about the artesian wells that the place is named after. It is based on something ignominious. So what is it? Someone from that small town pleaded guilty to money laundering in the amount of $25,000.00 in regards to a drug trafficking case, emanating from a federal investigation of an upsurge in violence based on drug use in the Mescalero Apache Reservation.  Jerilyn Munoz, 28, is the second person of 18 people charged to plead guilty. She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.

How much time will she end up with? In my opinion, if she cooperates she may get a lot less than 20 years.  It is in the discretion of the Judge.  I don't think she is facing a mandatory minimum.

Of the 18 people in the case, some may get probation, some may get a long time. Other factors include how much money they made in the scheme, and if any were repeat offenders. I have come across a Colombian in Fort Dix who got a 27 year sentence for money laundering in a drug case.  He already did like 12 years and he has like 10 to go. At least he is of a sane mind.

The feds don't play when it comes to these kind of crimes. It is part of the war on drugs. Remember, the upsurge in violence in the reservation came as a direct result of the methamphetamine users.  To see the story, go here...http://www.justice.gov/usao-nm/pr/artesia-woman-pleads-guilty-federal-money-laundering-charge
