Red flags are when the tax preparer is offering you a normal than larger refund, that is a red flag. If the tax preparer charges you based on the amount of your refund, that is a red flag.
Other scammers steal people's social security numbers so that they can file fraudulent tax returns and get refunds.
However, when the legitimate person will file his or her personal tax return and gets a notice that the return was filed already, the person will make a complaint and that will lead to an investigation which will end up being bad for the fraudster. The fraudster will end up being investigated and be brought to justice where he or she will lose everything that they stole from the government and they will end up earning 10 cents an hour.
