Mr. Wegner will have to leave Grosse Point lifestyle for Prison |
According to the Detroit Free Press, a Grosse Point lawyer received an 18 months prison sentence for coaching his client to lie regarding any past criminal sexual conduct conviction.
The Defense lawyer for the immigration lawyer begged for mercy on behalf of his client but the Federal Judge did not want to hear it. U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland said that Mr. Wegners actions are," the most serious crimes a lawyer can commit." The Judge said that the court will not tolerate perjury.
In my opinion, this is the reward for a lawyer who practiced immigration law and helped many clients for many years. He is now being dragged in the mud.

What I believe nailed Mr. Wegner was an email he sent to the client, where he said, “NO! NO! NO! The government doesn’t know anything about what happened in (the defendant's) 20’s. It’s simple and I have said it at least 10 times. If they know about it he will be deported plain and simple. The answer is NO.”
The alien confessed during the immigration court hearing, which in turn lead to Mr. Wegner's criminal conviction.
The 70 year old lawyer must sit at least 9 months in Federal Prison. Trust me, that is very tough for an older man. Prison is a dangerous place. I read that in Italy, anyone over 70 who is convicted for a white collar crime does home confinement. Why cannot the USA be as compassionate as that? I can feel for this person as I was also an immigration lawyer and ended up in jail. Thanks to my efforts, many people have a better life in this country but I had to pay a heavy price for breaking the law.
